How to start a successful bar

17 May 2022

Of course, when planning and designing the bar, one of the first things that springs to mind is the bar furniture. Let’s face it, there are hundreds of different bars out there so what will make yours stand out?

I mean, no one wants to be seen hanging out in a fusty old place where the furniture has seen better days and as for the cocktails…well…they definitely aren’t Instagrammable. So how can you create the perfect bar where customers will be desperate to get in, and the atmosphere is lively and fun?

One of the main things to consider is your concept & style, and this is the fun part of the planning process! If you’ve been dreaming of setting up a place of your own for a while, then you’ve most likely thought a great deal about this.

Location, location, location. I love when the interior matches the exterior – is your bar situated in an old Victorian style building that’s located on a cobbled street?

Dark, moody lighting mixed in with dark leather chairs and chunky wood tops creates the kind of speakeasy feel of the illicit drinking clubs of the 1900s…

Or, are you situated in the centre of a busy city centre, surrounded by modern skyscrapers?

Then how about a sleek, marble effect bar with luxurious velvet bar stools, Cosmopolitans poured out of brushed gold cocktail shakers, and surrounding tables featuring gold table bases and again, marble tops with a luxurious metallic gold or copper edge?

Another thing to consider along with the concept & style of your bar, is whether this matches the areas demographic; for example, a late-night cocktail bar would work perfectly in the busy streets of a city, however, this isn’t as likely to work as well in a well-to-do family filled neighbourhood, as a gastropub with family meal deals might.

What might work well and be successful in the busy streets of London may not suit a quiet village in the Cotswolds…. either way, here at Tabilo, we offer a large range of bar furniture, that suits a variety of different themes.

Have a favourite blush pink velvet that you love? Why not get the Chester Bar Stool upholstered in this using our COM Service, to sit up against the marble bar? And did you know the Chester is also available in dining height? Picture these next to our Made To Order Premium Laminate top in Pink, to match your upholstery, or even a contrasting yet complimentary colour, with gold edging (for the opulent finishing touch) on top of a glam gold table base, and you’ve created the perfect mix of elegance, style & comfort.

Or if you fancy a more industrial style bar, then the Winchester chair range is the perfect option for this – a mix of wood & metal, with the option to add a leather seat pad too, this adds to that classic ‘old warehouse’ look.

Another way to gain more customers, is to create an atmosphere that will make your customers want to come back. To create the right atmosphere, you will need to consider what type of customers you are wanting to attract. Once you have this sussed, then consider the lighting, the music, and if you are serving food, then how you will present this.

This again ties in with the overall style of your restaurant – if you’re creating a Speakeasy style bar, then dim lighting creates that more intimate, slightly secretive mood – picture yourself sitting on a comfy leather bar chair like the Sena Slate, watching flickering candles casting shadows across a dark Rustic Pine table top, so there’s just enough light to be able to see what cocktail you’re drinking, and the playing cards in front of you. Consider charcuterie boards filled with a range of pates, cheeses & olives…or small plates with fried chicken wings, truffle fries, or a big beef scotch egg. Jazz, Blues or Big Band music simmering in the background, and your drinks might include an Old Fashioned over orange peel and ice with smoke cascading across the citrus rubbed rim, or prohibition staple Sidecar cocktail in chilled glass with sugar rim and lemon peel draped as garnish over the side.

On the other hand, a sleek & modern bar featuring lots of marble and crystal chandeliers, needs brighter lighting – creating a livelier and more glamourous atmosphere. Focus on elegant and chic food presentation – think sushi and sashimi served on a beautiful, tiered stand, and glasses of champagne readily available. Chilled Dance music creating a modern upbeat vibe without getting the crowed too raucous.
